  • INHALATION
    		• Cough. Dizziness. Drowsiness. Headache. Laboured breathing. Sore throat.
    		Local exhaust or breathing protection.
    		Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
    		• MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Blisters (Further see Inhalation).
    		Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
    		Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention. Wear protective gloves when administering first aid.
  • EYES
    		• Redness. Pain.
    		Safety goggles or face shield.
    		First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
    		• Abdominal cramps. Diarrhoea. Nausea. Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Weakness (further see Inhalation).
    		Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
    		Rinse mouth. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention. See Notes.
    SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
    Evacuate danger area! Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles).
    		Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
    		Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
     COLOURLESS NEEDLE-LIKE CRYSTALS OR SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

     The substance decomposes on heating above 200░C, producing toxic fumes and toxic gases including hydrogen chloride - ICSC # 0163, dioxines, chlorinated phenols. Reacts violently with strong oxidants and water, causing fire and explosion hazard.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
     TLV: 0.5 ppm; mg/m3 (as TWA) (skin) (ACGIH 1991-1992).
    MAK: class III A2; H (1993).


    		ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
     The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin, and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
     The substance irritates the eyes, the skin, and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of this substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the cardiovascular system.

    EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
     Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, kidneys, liver, lungs. Tumours have been detected in experimental animals but may not be relevant to humans (see Notes).

         		This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water organisms. The substance may cause long-term effects in the aquatic environment.
    N O T E S
    The commercial product (which may be in solution) contains very toxic impurities (dioxins). Do not induce vomiting if pentachlorophenol is dissolved in organic solvents. IARC: carcinogen class IIB; CE: carcinogen category 3, R40. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient.
